Participants attending CEDA's 2nd stand alone technical visit to the Port of Gijón on 26-27 April had an exceptionally informative and enjoyable time. The visit was organised on behalf of CEDA by Dravosa, (Van Oord's Spanish subsidiary) partnership, who is the contractor for the reclamation part of the project in a joint venture with Boskalis and it was hosted and sponsored by the Port Authority of Gijón.
The visit started on Monday evening with a delicious dinner "Asturias style" with cider in the charming town of Candás. Next morning the group set off to the visitor centre "El Musel" where Mr Mario de Miguel Riestra, director of projects and works and Mr José Moyano, director of infrastructure gave a detailed explanation about the project and many of its challenges including the construction of the 3847 m long breakwater in a hostile environment.
Following the presentation participants enjoyed the magnificent view of the entire port from the nearby hilltop and then took a closer view of the breakwater and the 140 hectare reclamation site.
At the end of the visit participants were met by were greeted by the General Director of the Gijón Port Authority , José Luis Díaz Rato.
As these visits provide excellent opportunities to experience first-hand interesting projects, meet and talk to those directly involved in the planning and execution and to network with other colleagues CEDA is looking into ways to attract more CEDA members to these events.
